What Are IB Exams?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) exams are part of the globally recognized IB Diploma Programme (IBDP), designed for students in Grades 11 and 12. The IB is known for its rigorous academic standards and is widely accepted by leading universities around the world.

IB exams allow students to demonstrate their readiness for university-level education. Strong IB results significantly improve a student’s chances of gaining admission to top universities and securing scholarships. The IB curriculum emphasizes conceptual understanding, critical thinking, research skills, and real-world application, rather than rote memorization.

IB Exam Format

IB assessments are subject-specific and structured to evaluate both theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Most subjects include:

  • External written examinations conducted at the end of Grade 12

  • Internal Assessments (IAs) such as projects, laboratory reports, presentations, and coursework, which are completed during the academic year and moderated externally

In addition to subject assessments, IB Diploma students must complete three core components:

  • Extended Essay (EE)

  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge together contribute up to 3 bonus points, allowing students to achieve a maximum total score of 45 points.

Students choose a combination of Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) subjects. HL subjects involve greater depth and academic rigor and are often prioritized by universities during admissions.

IB Subjects Offered

IB students select six subjects across six academic groups, ensuring a balanced and comprehensive education:

  • Includes subjects such as English Language and Literature.

  • Includes foreign languages such as French, Spanish, and Mandarin.

  • Includes History, Economics, Business Management, and Geography.

  • Includes Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

  • Includes:

    • Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA)

    • Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI)

  • Includes Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, or an additional subject from another group.

Across all subjects, the IB curriculum emphasizes conceptual understanding, analytical thinking, research skills, and academic writing.

  • 42 points from six subjects

  • 3 bonus points from TOK and Extended Essay

Scores of 6 and 7 are considered excellent and are highly valued by universities. Many top institutions prefer applicants with overall scores in the high 30s or above, along with strong performance in Higher Level subjects.
