Digital SAT Test Format:

The Digital SAT Test consists of 2 sections: English (Reading, Writing) and Mathematics.

Each section - scored on a scale of 200 to 800 - consists of two modules. The scores from each section - English and Math - combine to create a total score ranging from 400 to 1600.

The test lasts for 2 hours and 14 minutes (plus a 10 minute break after completion of the first two sections) with 98 questions, and the format follows an adaptive method of adjusting according to performance. What this means is that for both English and Math, students see the same level of difficulty for Module 1, and depending on how well they have scored, they are shown a harder or easier level for Module 2. If a harder level is presented for Module 2, that means the student has done well on Module 1 and can expect a score in the higher range (Note: College Board does not disclose the exact range one can expect their score to fall within to achieve a high score).

Additionally, there is no negative marking on the SAT Exam, so students are encouraged to attempt all questions in the exam to improve their chances of a correct response and a higher score.

  • The Digital SAT Reading and Writing section takes a total of 64 minutes (32 minutes per 27 questions in a module). Students are tested on reading comprehension and grammar skills that use excerpts of literature, science, history, and social study texts.

This area examines the capacity of the student in understanding the concepts conveyed in writing, applying grammar concepts, and communicating effectively.

  • A 70-minute math session has 44 questions (35 minutes per 22 questions in a module) that test algebra, data analysis, advanced math, and geometry. Specific calculators are allowed throughout the math section. A graphing Desmos calculator is provided right within the test software for easy access.

SAT Score Requirements

The score ranges for admission to colleges differ from college to college. However, assuming that you are in the USA, for Ivy League colleges, scores above 1500 are always outstanding, while for the Top 50 colleges, scores ranging from 1400-1490 are considered strong, for competitive state colleges, scores between 1200-1390 are good, and for less-selective state colleges, scores between 1030-1190 are average, though scores in the mid-1500s are expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Digital SAT takes 2 hours and 14 minutes to complete. It has two main sections: Reading & Writing for 64 minutes and Math for 70 minutes.

  • A good SAT score depends on the colleges you are applying to. Scores of 1450+ place students in the top 10%, while 1500+ is competitive for top universities.

  • Yes. A calculator is allowed for the entire Math section. The Digital SAT includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator, and approved personal calculators are also permitted.

  • The digital SAT is shorter, has fewer questions, uses adaptive testing that adjusts difficulty based on performance, and allows calculator use throughout the math section. The paper version of the SAT was discontinued in 2023.

  • Most students take the SAT two to three times. Many colleges practice superscoring, which considers your highest section scores across all test dates, making multiple attempts beneficial in some cases.

  • The SAT is offered eight times in a calendar year. You can take the SAT multiple times a year. Most students take it 2 to 3 times to improve scores.

  • Start your SAT preparation at least 4-6 months before your test date. Depending on the score the student receives in ReWiser’s online diagnostic test, the academic counsellor would recommend the required duration that the student needs to prepare for SAT readiness.

  • The SAT is not mandatory in all colleges today, as many have adopted test-optional policies. However, a strong SAT score can still boost your application and increase your scholarship opportunities. It’s always better to review the guidelines of each college.

  • Every college sets its own merit scholarship criteria. The higher your score, the better your chances. Students with 1400 plus often qualify for more generous scholarships.

  • The SAT adapts to your performance. If your performance in the first module is strong, the second module will be tougher with a higher scoring impact.

  • ReWiser provides personalized study plans with 30-plus full-length mock tests, detailed prep material, flexible one-on-one or group sessions, and dedicated mentor support at every stage of your preparation to ensure adequate readiness for the SAT.
