When Should You Start Preparing for the SAT?
Many families assume SAT prep begins in Grade 11. Smart planning starts much sooner and it doesn't mean marathon study sessions.
The Grade-by-Grade Game Plan
Grade 9: Start with PSAT prep and build your reading and math habits.
Grade 10: Take a SAT diagnostic test to find your baseline. Take the PSAT and a few manageable APs.
Grade 11: Write the PSAT (US citizens), then the SAT itself, alongside APs.
Grade 12: Focus on college applications and focus on taking any remaining APs.
Insider Tips
Start with a Diagnostic Test first. A diagnostic test shows exactly where points are hiding, so you don't waste time on strengths.
English requires more in-depth preparation time. SAT Math is more aligned with school curriculum — SAT English isn’t so much, and the exam tests your reading over the past 5-6 years. Reading and writing skills grow slowly, so early prep pays off.
Treat the PSAT as a rehearsal. It's the closest preview of the real SAT and the scores and these scores are not sent to universities.
Prep around your profile. Test scores are one piece. Activities, grades and AP's all matter, so keep profile development running all four years.
Don't cram. Mentors help create a personalized and detailed calendar plan so prep is structured and effective. Steady, small efforts beat last-minute panic every time.
Takeaway
Aim to begin light prep in Grade 9 and focused prep in Grade 10 (remember, consistent daily non-fiction reading is helpful Grade 5 onwards). By Grade 11, you'll walk into the SAT calm, confident and ready to retake only if you choose to.
Parents: your job is to protect time, celebrate progress and keep the stress low.
