ESAT Prep with Expert Guidance
What Is the ESAT Exam?
The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is an entrance examination designed to assess a student's scientific knowledge, mathematical understanding, and problem-solving abilities.
It is used by leading UK universities for competitive courses such as Engineering, Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering, and related science-based programmes.
The ESAT assesses students across subjects such as Mathematics, Advanced Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, depending on their chosen course. Rather than focusing solely on memorisation, it evaluates how effectively students apply core scientific and mathematical concepts, think logically, and solve problems under timed conditions.
ESAT Exam Format:
The ESAT consists of multiple 40-minute modules, each containing 27 multiple-choice questions. Students take different combinations of modules depending on their chosen university course.
Each module assesses a specific subject, including Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry, or Biology. Calculators are not allowed during the examination.
The test focuses on mathematical and scientific reasoning, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving skills rather than simply memorising formulas.
-
The ESAT syllabus is based on pre-university Mathematics and Science, covering topics typically taught in international high schools and UK A-Level programmes. It assesses students' understanding of fundamental concepts and their ability to apply them to solve unfamiliar problems.
Topics of focus:
Mathematics 1: Algebra, equations, ratios, geometry, graphs, and basic trigonometry.
Mathematics 2: Advanced algebra, functions, sequences, series, and more complex mathematical concepts.
Physics: Mechanics, electricity, waves, energy, and matter.
Chemistry: Atomic structure, chemical bonding, chemical reactions, acids, and the periodic table.
Biology: Cell biology, genetics, ecology, human physiology, and biological processes.
Note: Students take different combinations of modules depending on their chosen university course.
-
ESAT scores range from 1.0 to 9.0, reported in increments of 0.1. Each module receives a separate score, and there is no overall combined score.
The average candidate typically scores around 4.5, while scores above 7.0 place students among approximately the top 10% of candidates. Scores of 8.0 or higher indicate exceptional performance.
Universities consider ESAT scores alongside students' academic records and other application components when making admission decisions. There is no fixed qualifying score or universal cut-off, as expectations vary depending on the university and course.
Results are generally released around four weeks after the test, with October sitting results released in November and January sitting results released in February.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
The ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) is used by top UK universities—primarily the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London—to assess candidates applying for undergraduate courses in Engineering, Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, and related STEM disciplines. It evaluates scientific knowledge, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving skills beyond standard high school curricula.
-
Yes. While the foundational topics are based on high school curricula (such as A-Level Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), the ESAT tests deep conceptual understanding, rapid problem-solving, and the ability to apply scientific principles to unfamiliar scenarios under strict time constraints.
-
ESAT results are scaled on a scale from 1.0 to 9.0.
5.0 represents an average competitive score.
6.5 – 7.0+ is generally considered a strong score for competitive applicants to Cambridge or Imperial College London.
What qualifies as a "good" score varies by subject and applicant pool each year, as universities evaluate scores holistically alongside academic grades, personal statements, and interviews.
-
Candidates are permitted to sit the ESAT only once per application cycle. If you are reapplying in a subsequent academic year, you may take the exam again for that cycle.
-
Scope & Focus: SAT Math assesses core high school math skills for US college admissions, while AP exams test specific subject knowledge in a curriculum-based format. The ESAT is a specialized assessment designed for UK admissions that tests multi-disciplinary STEM subjects (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology) in combined modules.
Question Style: ESAT questions emphasize rapid critical thinking, logical deductions, and applying scientific concepts to novel problems rather than routine formula application or recall.
Format & Calculators: The ESAT is a multiple-choice exam, and calculators are strictly forbidden, requiring strong mental arithmetic and estimation skills.
-
Students should begin preparing 6 to 8 months before the test date (typically starting during the summer before Year 13 / Grade 12). Early preparation allows students to thoroughly review fundamental Maths and Science concepts, practice pacing without a calculator, and complete past/specimen papers.
-
Targeted Subject Modules: Diagnostic practice across Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology to identify and fix weakness areas.
Time-Management & Strategy Sessions: Training on mental math techniques, process-of-elimination strategies, and fast problem-solving under non-calculator conditions.
Mock Tests & Detailed Feedback: Full-length simulated ESAT exam practice with detailed performance analytics to build confidence and accuracy.
